Richard A. Palmer, PhD

Focus Program Faculty Director

Richard A. Palmer is Professor Emeritus of Chemistry at Duke University.

Dr. Palmer's research interests span the areas of analytical, inorganic and physical chemistry.

He is currently Faculty Director for the Focus Program and has been involved with the program for many years. He has taught frequently in the program in science-related clusters on biology, science, and evolution.

Some of his current projects involve the use of FTIR spectroscopy in the investigation of dynamic processes on the nanosecond to millisecond time scale. Included are nanosecond studies of photoexcited states in metalloproteins and other metal complexes, rheo-optical measurements of the sub-molecular dynamics of polymer films perturbed by mechanical fields and development of fiber optic-based photothermal spectral detection for materials and biomedical applications.

More information on Dr. Palmer and his research can be found at the Chemistry Department web site.
